Information For Newcomers
If you are coming to meditation practice for the first time, this page should help to answer some of your questions, and provide information you will need. For your first visit, you should also plan to arrive about 6:15 PM for a brief orientation. The orientation takes place immediately before our regular meditation practice.
The orientation is intended for anyone regardless of previous meditation experience. Although many of the people who go through the orientation are beginners, experienced meditators who have not previously practiced with our group will benefit from experiencing the orientation. How long is the orientation, and what is covered? The orientation takes about 15 minutes. We will cover the basics of sitting meditation : correct posture and breath counting as well as the basic rituals for practicing zazen. Does it cost anything? We rent our meeting space from the Friends Meeting House. To support our practice, a $5 donation from non-members would be most appreciated. What do people wear during meditation? We recommend that you wear loose fitting and comfortable clothes when you come to meditation practice. Generally you avoid also bright colors or any other kinds of clothing that could be distracting. Will I need to bring anything to sit on? No. We have cushions (zafus and zabatons), a seiza bench and chairs, but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish. Is sitting uncomfortable? No. You should sit in a way that encourages mindfulness - but not one that causes unecessary discomfort. Chairs and a folding bench are available for anyone unable to sit on a cushion. Is Zen Meditation difficult to do? Probably the most difficult aspect of meditation for beginners, is simply sitting still for 25 minutes. As you practice, you find that this becomes easier with time. Its perfectly OK to sit in a chair, if you prefer - sitting still in a chair is much better than fidgeting on a meditation cushion. How do I arrange for an orientation? Please send us email at least a day before you plan to attend. Where is Mintwood Zendo located? We meet at the Friends Meeting House in Washington, DC. Are you close to the Metro? Yes, its about a 5 minute walk. Take the Red Line to Dupont Circle and use the Q Street exit from Metro; walk north on Connecticut Ave. (uphill) approximately two and a half blocks to Florida Avenue; turn left on Florida and walk approximately half a block to the Meetinghouse on the right. How do you sit Zazen? Here are some basic sitting meditation instructions.
